Se ha desempeñado como consultor en el área de comercio internacional del Departamento de Investigación del Banco Mundial, y como Visiting Scholar en el Fondo Monetario Internacional. También ha sido profesor visitante en el Departamento de Economía de Dartmouth College en Estados Unidos. Pertenece al comité evaluador de Becas Chile de Conicyt en el programa de formación de capital humano.
Ha publicado en prestigiosas revistas como Journal of International Economics, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Hurman Resources, Economía Chilena, entre otras.

Sus principales áreas de investigación son el desarrollo económico, el comercio internacional y la microeconometría aplicada.
