Con una carrera profesional de más de 20 años, Rodrigo Barraza Vicencio ha trabajado tanto en la industria como en el mundo académico y docente, participando en múltiples proyectos de investigación.

Comenzó su formación en la Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (UTFSM), donde estudió Ingeniería Civil Mecánica (2005) y luego, en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison (Estados Unidos), realizó un Master (2011) y un Ph.D. (2015) en Ingeniería Mecánica. Actualmente, dirige el Centro de Transición Energética (CENTRA) de la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI).

Previo a su llegada a la UAI, trabajó en el Departamento de Ingeniería Mecánica de la UTFSM, donde se desempeñó como instructor académico (2015 – 2019), profesor asistente (2019 – 2023), hasta llegar a profesor asociado (2023 – 2024). Además, fue. director de Asesoría Industrial y Servicios de la Dirección General de Investigación, Innovación y Emprendimiento de la misma casa de estudios (2021 – 2024). En tanto, en la industria, trabajó como ingeniero, jefe y gerente de Proyectos en Gamma Ingenieros S.A., Chile (2005 – 2010). 

Es especialista en conversión y gestión de energía, con especial foco en energía solar y transferencia de calor y fluidos. Además, cuenta con amplia experiencia en la evaluación del desempeño energético de módulos fotovoltaicos, diseño de sistemas solares para suministro de calor a procesos industriales por medio de investigación experimental y modelamiento computacional. 

La principal motivación de Rodrigo es contribuir, a través de la investigación aplicada, al desarrollo de una industria nacional basada en la innovación tecnológica, y de hecho, la posibilidad de generar conocimiento útil y aplicable impulsa su deseo de explorar nuevas ideas. 

Su compromiso con la investigación aplicada y su capacidad para integrar conocimiento teórico y práctico destacan en su contribución al avance de la ingeniería energética. Esto se evidencia en que sus trabajos han sido publicado en numerosas revistas nacionales e internacionales, y en su participación en múltiples proyectos de investigación patrocinados por distintas convocatorias como Fondecyt y Fondef.

Además, ha dedicado gran parte de su carrera académica al acompañamiento de estudiantes de postgrado, siendo profesor guía de doctorado y magíster. Para Rodrigo, la experiencia de contribuir tanto a la formación profesional como al desarrollo personal de las y los estudiantes ha sido enormemente gratificante. Ser profesor le ha permitido comprender la importancia del rol transformador que ejerce el docente y la gran responsabilidad que ello implica, alentándolo a ser cada vez más consciente y comprometido en la práctica académica.
