Con una trayectoria académica sobresaliente, Paula Mellado Martin ha dedicado su carrera a la investigación en el campo de la física de materiales cuánticos. Su formación comenzó en la Universidad de Chile, donde obtuvo sus títulos de Ingeniería Civil Química e Ingeniería Civil en Biotecnología en 2001. Tras dos años de experiencia en la industria minera chilena, en 2004 inició sus estudios de Doctorado en Física y Astronomía en la prestigiosa Universidad Johns Hopkins en Estados Unidos (EE.UU), programa que completó con éxito en 2010.

Ese mismo año fue seleccionada por el Kavli Institute de EE.UU., obteniendo financiamiento para realizar su estadía postdoctoral en la Universidad Harvard, donde continuó su investigación durante dos años. A mediados de 2012, regresó a Chile para integrarse como académica de jornada completa en la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI), institución donde actualmente es profesora titular. Su trayectoria refleja un firme compromiso con la excelencia académica y un liderazgo consolidado a nivel nacional e internacional en el estudio de materiales cuánticos.

A lo largo de su carrera, Paula ha sido reconocida con diversas distinciones, entre ellas la prestigiosa Beca Emmy Noether otorgada por el Gobierno de Canadá en 2018. Además, ha liderado cuatro proyectos de investigación financiados por Fondecyt y Conicyt, y su trabajo ha sido destacado internacionalmente a través de conferencias invitadas en universidades de renombre, incluyendo Harvard y la Universidad de Tokio.

Más allá de su quehacer científico, Paula se ha distinguido por su labor en divulgación científica y en la gestión académica. Ha participado activamente en programas gubernamentales para promover la participación de mujeres en la ciencia y forma parte de la mesa experta que diseña la Estrategia Nacional para Tecnologías Cuánticas en Chile. Además, preside el Comité Académico de Jerarquización de la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la UAI.

Su investigación se centra en la búsqueda de nuevas formas de materia que permitan optimizar el transporte de energía e información, mediante la manipulación de las propiedades de materiales cuánticos. Paula está comprometida con el desarrollo de soluciones sustentables y escalables para el transporte de luz, materia e información, con el objetivo de aportar al progreso científico y al bienestar de la sociedad.

Como académica, Paula cultiva valores como la transparencia, originalidad y rigurosidad, aspirando siempre a que sus investigaciones reflejen fielmente las mediciones y fenómenos observados en la naturaleza. Además, considera el contacto con sus estudiantes una fuente constante de inspiración y renovación en su quehacer científico.
