Michael T. Roman es un destacado académico, experto en las atmósferas de los gigantes de hielo del Sistema Solar, los cuales se encuentran entre los cuerpos más intrigantes y menos explorados en la ciencia planetaria.

Comenzó su formación profesional en la Universidad Cornell (Estados Unidos), donde realizó su B.S, Magíster y Ph.D. en Ciencias Atmosféricas, y en los últimos 10 años se ha especializado en caracterizar las atmósferas planetarias, desde estudios observacionales del Sistema Solar exterior hasta el modelado teórico de atmósferas de exoplanetas.

Previo a su llegada a la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI), entre 2015 a 2018, se desempeñó como investigador postdoctoral asociado del Departamento de Astronomía de la Universidad de Michigan (Estados Unidos). Posteriormente, ocupó un puesto en el Reino Unido como investigador asociado postdoctoral en la Escuela de Física y Astronomía de la Universidad de Leicester (2018-2025), donde conserva el título de investigador asociado honorario en reconocimiento a su colaboración continua con el Grupo de Ciencias Planetarias.

Específicamente, investiga las atmósferas de otros planetas, dentro y fuera del Sistema Solar. Para ello, adquiere datos mediante la observación telescópica y desarrolla modelos físicos y numéricos para explicar estas observaciones. En los últimos años, ha centrado su trabajo en la observación de las atmósferas de Urano y Neptuno, que siguen siendo los planetas menos explorados del Sistema Solar. Al modelizar el transporte de luz y calor en sus atmósferas, su investigación ayuda a revelar nuevos detalles sobre la composición atmosférica, las temperaturas y la evolución con el tiempo.

Para Michael, es un privilegio poder investigar y descubrir nuevos detalles sobre casi cualquier tema, por lo mismo, como investigador, le motiva la simple curiosidad y la emoción de resolver intrigantes rompecabezas científicos que hacen avanzar su comprensión de la naturaleza.

Finalmente, Michael considera que a la hora de aprender, todas las personas tienen estilos y necesidades diferentes, por lo que su filosofía de enseñanza se ha ido formando, desarrollando y evolucionando continuamente gracias a sus interacciones con los estudiantes.
