Javier Lopatin Fourcade es ingeniero en Recursos Naturales Renovables de la Universidad de Chile (2011), grado que complementó con un Diplomado en Geomática Aplicada (2012) en la misma casa de estudios. Posteriormente, realizó un doctorado en Recursos Naturales en el Instituto de Geografía y Geocología (IfGG) del Instituto Tecnológico de Karlsruhe (KIT) en Alemania (2019).

Previo a su llegada a la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) en marzo de 2021, se desempeñó como investigador de la Universidad de Chile y del Instituto Tecnológico de Karlsruhe (Alemania). Además, en 2020 realizó clases en el Diplomado en Geomática Aplicada de la Universidad de Chile. 

Sus áreas de investigación se centran en la ecología del paisaje y la ecología de ecosistemas, utilizando datos obtenidos por teledetección de satélite y drones. Algunos de sus principales temas de estudio incluyen las estimaciones de biodiversidad, propiedades y funciones ecosistémicas como la biomasa y el carbono subterráneo, composición florística de las comunidades vegetales, detección de especies invasoras, incendios, y cambios de uso de suelo, entre otras, utilizando métodos de machine y deep learning. 

Su motivación para seguir investigando y explorando nuevas áreas de conocimiento radica en ayudar a comprender el planeta, pero también a desarrollar políticas públicas inteligentes al mundo cambiante de hoy. Por lo mismo, considera que uso de teledetección, por ejemplo de datos satelitales, tiene un gran potencial para ayudar a comprender los procesos que ocurren en la Tierra.

Ha realizado presentaciones científicas en Chile, Alemania, Estados Unidos, Italia, Austria y Francia; y sus trabajos han sido publicados en importantes sitios de investigación científicas. Además, es revisor de destacadas revistas sobre ecología, tales como IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine, Applied Vegetation Science (Wiley), Ecological Indicators (Elsevier), entre otras. 

También es miembro de la Asociación Internacional de Ciencias de la Vegetación (IAVS), de la Red de Observatorios de Biodiversidad del Grupo de Observación de la Tierra (GEOBON), de la Sociedad Internacional de Fotogrametría y Teledetección (ISPRS), y de la Sociedad de Geociencia y Teledetección (IEEE). 

Para Javier, la docencia y la investigación van muchas veces de la mano. Esto, puesto que el proceso de co-diseño de ideas y desarrollos es siempre enriquecedor, sobre todo en la sala de clases y mediante tutelas o supervisiones de tesis o investigaciones. El académico considera fundamental tomar en cuenta todas las visiones y opiniones sobre un tema o actividad, ya que muchas veces las mejores investigaciones surgen durante una clase.
