Cristian Martinez-Villalobos es Licenciado y Magíster en Física de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC) y, en 2016 obtuvo su Ph.D. en Ciencias Atmosféricas y Oceánicas en la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison.  

Su área de investigación se centra en la variabilidad climática y el cambio climático, donde analiza principalmente los factores relacionados a la variación del clima y cómo el aumento de gases de efecto invernadero atmosféricos se traducen en cambios en el clima en distintos lugares, respectivamente. Actualmente, cuenta con dos líneas de investigación principales: el estudio de las interacciones entre el océano y la atmósfera que generan fenómenos climáticos tales como El Niño, y el análisis de eventos meteorológicos extremos. Con la primera busca comprender los mecanismos detrás de distintos modos de variabilidad climática, mientras que con la segunda, su objetivo es entender cómo el cambio climático modifica las intensidades, duraciones y frecuencias de fenómenos como las precipitaciones extremas, las olas de calor terrestres y marinas, y la sequía. 

Su principal motivación a la hora de investigar es la curiosidad, puesto que siempre busca entender cómo funcionan las cosas. Cristian disfruta enormemente cuando las piezas de un puzzle empiezan a calzar y encuentra la solución a un problema.  

Previo a su incorporación a la Facultad de Ingeniería y Ciencias de la Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez (UAI) en marzo de 2021, se desempeñó como investigador postdoctoral en el Centro de Estudios Avanzados en Zonas Áridas (Chile) y en el Departamento de Ciencias Atmosféricas y Oceánicas de la Universidad de California, Los Angeles (Estados Unidos). 

Desde marzo de 2022, Cristian es miembro del Panel Regional del Pacífico de CLIVAR (Climate and Ocean: Variability, Predictability and Change), un proyecto central del Programa Mundial de Investigaciones Climáticas, entidad patrocinada por la Organización Meteorológica Mundial, el Consejo Científico Internacional y la UNESCO. También es miembro de los grupos de trabajo internacional sobre olas de calor marinas, métricas de El Niño, y sobre teleconexiones atmosféricas del Océano Pacífico bajo cambio climático. Desde marzo del 2025 es miembro del equipo de trabajo del World Climate Research Programme para la inclusión del Sur Global, creado para abordar la necesidad de aumentar la inclusión de científicos del Sur Global. Además, ha participado como expositor en diversas conferencias en Estados Unidos, Europa y Chile, y es miembro de la Sociedad Meteorológica Americana y de la Unión Geofísica Americana. 

Como profesor, considera imprescindible poder generar curiosidad en sus alumnos y crearles el deseo y la necesidad de aprender. Además, cree que es sumamente importante su incorporación temprana en la investigación, ya que como han crecido rodeados de nuevas tecnologías, poseen formas innovadoras de mirar un problema y pueden encontrar soluciones originales. Asimismo, Cristian considera que aunque los profesores son los que en primera instancia enseñan a los alumnos, también se puede aprender mucho de ellos y de su forma de entender el mundo.
