Su investigación se enfoca principalmente en modelar numéricamente distintos sistemas astrofísicos en los que la acreción es importante, desde discos protoplanetarios y estrellas binarias hasta agujeros negros súper masivos. También ha estudiado aspectos de la dinámica de rayos cósmicos, la evolución de estrellas masivas, la dinámica de sistemas planetarios, y la astronomía griega antigua. 

Con su equipo ha publicado video juegos y animaciones basados en simulaciones astrofísicas. Además, ha asesorado distintos proyectos de difusión de la ciencia, incluyendo cuentos y dibujos animados.  

Antes de integrarse a la UAI, trabajó en la Universidad de Colorado, el Observatorio Astronómico de Shanghai, el Instituto Max Planck de Astrofísica, y la Universidad Católica de Chile. Ha sido Director de un Grupo Asociado Max Planck sobre Astrofísica del Centro Galáctico y Director Alterno del Núcleo Milenio de Formación Planetaria
