Guide to the Responsible and Ethical Use of Artificial Intelligence for UAI Students

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already part of our everyday lives. At Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, we believe that, when used ethically, critically, and responsibly, AI can enhance your learning, open up new opportunities, and help you develop the skills and competencies required in today’s world.

But that is not all. We also recognize that improper use can lead to superficial learning, prevent you from developing the key skills and competencies needed today, reduce your autonomy, create ethical risks, and even result in academic sanctions.

Learning with Flexability requires cognitive engagement and productive intellectual effort. For that reason, delegating all of your work to a machine weakens your intellectual abilities. Our University promotes a culture of transparency, where disclosing the use of these technologies helps protect your academic integrity in the face of possible errors or hallucinations generated by an algorithm.

The purpose of this guide is to help you learn how to use AI as an ally in your learning process, not as a substitute for your own effort and creativity. We hope you will become a critical strategist: someone capable of validating information and leading creative processes responsibly. Through a set of guiding principles and a traffic-light system, this guide will help you distinguish between permitted uses and prohibited practices that constitute academic misconduct, such as direct plagiarism.

Principles to Guide Your Work with AI

These principles have been adapted from the UAI Institutional AI Policy and from international consensus frameworks, including those developed by UNESCO and leading universities:

AI is a powerful tool when you know how and when to use it:

➤ To learn more effectively:
o Ask for explanations of a topic at different levels of difficulty.
o Use AI to create summaries, concept maps, or examples, which you then verify against your course readings.

➤ To develop critical thinking:
o Always compare AI-generated information with reliable sources.
o Ask yourself: what limitations or biases might this response contain?

➤ To exercise your creativity:
o Use AI as an “idea generator,” but make sure the final version reflects your own voice.
o Improve the drafts it provides; do not simply copy them as they are.

➤ To practice, as though it were an intellectual gym. Use AI to train your mind, not to replace it.
o Simulate questions, interviews, presentations, or debates with AI.
o Practice writing clear and effective prompts, using models such as R.O.C.E.F. — Role, Objective, Context, Example, and Format.
o Use AI as a sparring partner: ask it to act as a skeptical critic who challenges your arguments.
o Ask AI to pose challenging questions that help you define your position, rather than asking it to write the introduction for you.

⛔ What NOT to Do with AI

Use it to submit work as though it were your own.
Manipulate data, invent citations, or create deepfakes.
Fail to disclose its use.
Trust it blindly without verifying.
Use it as a shortcut to avoid reading, writing, or engaging in personal reflection.

✅ Student Responsibilities When Using AI

Understand the instructor’s rules regarding the use of AI in each course.
Always disclose the use of AI in any academic activity or submission.
Understand the cases in which the use of AI may constitute plagiarism.

🚦A Guide Based on the Traffic-Light System

This traffic-light system indicates the permitted use of AI in the different activities of each course. If the rules have not been specified, ask your instructor.

➤ Blue: AI use is required

➤ Green: AI use is recommended to enhance learning. This includes activities such as brainstorming, requesting simplified explanations of complex concepts, receiving feedback on spelling or style, organizing your study plan, and simulating assessments or test questions.

➤ Yellow: AI use is permitted, but requires strict verification and disclosure. This includes asking for preliminary outlines for answers, organizing the structure of an assignment, exploring possible bibliographic sources, among other uses.

➤ Red: These are practices that constitute academic misconduct or intellectual dishonesty. Using AI to write methodology sections, interpret results, or generate analytical content is prohibited, as is copying and pasting AI-generated answers in exams, delegating the full writing of an essay to AI, among other practices. In addition, using AI in assessments without the instructor’s express authorization, or fabricating bibliographic references, is considered a serious violation.

💡Practical Advice for UAI Students

➤ Order matters. Work independently first, and then use AI to validate or correct your work. Do not do this the other way around, as it may undermine your learning.

➤ Clear ideas lead to better results. The outcome depends on your ability to formulate clear, well-structured instructions.

➤ Disclosing the use of AI is not the same as confessing to wrongdoing. Whenever you use AI in your academic activities, make sure its use is authorized and disclose it correctly. To learn how to cite AI, consult the guides provided by the Writing and Public Speaking Center:

➤ Be critical.Do not settle for the first response. Ask, compare, and adjust. Remember that AI predicts words statistically, which means it does not always provide real evidence.

➤ Protect your voice. AI can give you ideas, but the thinking and style must be your own.

➤ Protect your data. Before uploading anything to a platform, ask yourself whether you would be comfortable posting that information on open social media.

➤ Mandatory triangulation. Make it a rule that every claim made by AI must be checked against real sources, such as class notes, Google Scholar, books, papers, and databases. If you cannot verify the source, the information does NOT exist. As a student, you must always remain critical and avoid settling for the first response.

And most importantly. Make sure that, if one day you do not have AI available, you still have the skills to complete the same tasks without AI support.
